2VS News for the Week of January 21st

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend! For the week of January 21st, please focus on the Week 16 spelling words and Week 16 vocabulary words. For this week, students will be learning a new syllable, the r-controlled syllable. This week's spelling words will focus on the -ar and -or sounds. You may reference the Unit 8 Fundations Family Letter on the website to further explain the phonics focus of the week. In math, we will continue in Unit 5 focusing on mentally adding and subtracting 10 and 100, as well as using an open number line and the change diagram as strategies for solving number stories. You may reference the Unit 5 Everyday Math Family letter for assistance with the math focus of this week. We will continue practicing the reading comprehension strategy of "wondering" during our oral read alouds and independent reading. In writing, students will begin working on a new opinion piece about the groundhog on Groundhog Day. They will be sharing their opinion regarding whether they hope the groundhog sees or does not see his shadow on Groundhog Day, and provide reasons to support their opinions. We continue to work in our new science unit titled "The Everchanging Earth." Students are learning about the many changes that occur on the earth's surface. Students learned about fast changes such as earthquakes and volcanoes, and slow changes including weathering and erosion. This week, students will be integrating technology into science by exploring Studioboards on Discovery Education to further their understanding about changes on the earth's surface. Finally, in social studies, we are continuing our unit on Family Traditions and Ancestors. This week, students will be completing their ancestor shields in class and then sharing their ancestry with their classmates. Please remember that the students need to complete the personal timeline template that went home last week and return it to school by next Monday, January 27th. This is our final so
