For thousands of years, artists have created works that have communicated ideas and expressed feelings in ways that spoken or written words cannot. Art is a universal language that crosses language barriers of different countries and engages viewers in unparalleled ways of knowing and understanding.
In this site you will find pairs of artworks with similar themes but often with distinctly different feelings, styles, moods, or meaning. These differences may have been influenced by the artist's environment, cultural beliefs, personal insight or particular historical events. To make best use of this site, teachers or students may use these works as a resource for examining, analyzing and judging artworks in a comparative way. The biographies and image information may also aid in understanding and appreciating the meaning and value of all types and styles of art.
