Procedure
for Handling Requests for Removal of Library Materials
No
materials whose appropriateness is challenged shall be removed from the
Library Media Center except upon the recommendation of a review
committee with the concurrence of the superintendent.
The following procedure will be observed:
- Requests
for removal of materials will be reported to the building principal.
- Within
five school days, the principal will contact the complainant to
discuss the request for removal of materials and attempt to resolve
it informally by explaining the philosophy and goals of the North
Attleborough Public Schools and the Library Media Center Materials
Selection Policy.
- If
the request is not resolved informally, the complainant will be
supplied a packet containing copies of the school’s instructional
goals and objectives, the Library Materials Selection Policy, the
Procedure for Handling Requests for Removal of
Library Materials, and the Formal Request for Reconsideration
of Library Materials.
- If
the principal has not received the Formal Request for
Reconsideration of Library Materials within two weeks, the issue
will be considered closed.
- If
the Formal Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials is
returned to the principal, the library media specialists will
provide the principal with the reasons for selection of the
challenged material. Upon receipt of the Formal Request, the
principal will appoint a review committee of five to consider the
request for removal. The
committee will consist of the curriculum coordinator or department
head, the principal, a library media specialist, a teacher and a
parent elected to the School Council.
- No
materials being considered for removal shall be removed from the
Library Media Center pending the final decision of the review
committee.
- The
review committee will meet to discuss the request and make a
recommendation concerning the challenged material within thirty days
of receipt of the Formal Request for Reconsideration of Library
Materials. The complainant will be notified in writing of the
meeting and has the right to present his/her concerns
to the review committee.
8.
The principal will notify the complainant in writing of the
committee’s decision
within three school days of the
meeting and send a copy of the decision to the
superintendent.
